It may look like an ordinary, albeit pretty, pub from the outside, but experienced chefs Maryann Wright and Susan Manson have made Y Polyn far from average.

Just a mile or so from the National Botanic Gardens of Wales, the whitewashed, half-timbered building has become a destination in itself and you’ll need to book a couple of weeks in advance to secure a weekend table.

A menu of deceptively simple food with the emphasis on top-notch (often local) ingredients and some of the classic European bistro dishes comes with a great value selection of wines. For their husbands, erstwhile editor of the AA Restaurant Guide Simon Wright and ex-AA restaurant inspector Mark Manson, it’s a case of gamekeeper turned poacher, but the response from their former guidebook peers (an Egon Ronay Star included) has been enthusiastic.

They run a relaxed front of house, (don’t expect too much standing on ceremony) that complements the dining room with its bare wood tables and chapel chairs.
