Whether you eat in the bar or restaurant of this most historic of Caernarfon hostelries you can expect honest and substantial cooking with a real Welsh flavour and a real passion for local produce. The bar has the warm and relaxed atmosphere that you might hope from an inn that has been providing sustenance to travellers since the beginning of the 1500’s. The bar is wonderfully authentic and has retained not just its historic charm but also the feel of a real local where visitors have been welcomed for hundreds of years.

The restaurant offers a little more in the way of space, comfort and calm but it too has great character and benefits from an informal atmosphere that sits well with the rustic, no-nonsense food on offer. The a la carte menu is supplemented by a blackboard of specials that are particularly strong on local seafood – it’s worth remembering that mussels, oysters, scallops, crab and lobster are all harvested local to here. Starters might include a duck and orange pate with ginger and apple chutney or Caerphilly cheese tartlet whilst typical of some robust main course are Caernarfon Lob Scouse or shank of Welsh lamb with rosemary and redcurrant gravy. There are grills, sandwiches and a children’s menu also on offer. It’s not fine dining and nor is it intended to be but it is full-flavoured, satisfying food cooked on the premises. A place where you can get a really satisfying meal in a place packed with local character and indeed local characters.
