It takes confidence and skill to do the simple things well in the world of restaurant cooking. At the Hardwick you’ll find one of the great practitioners of the art in Stephen Terry. His is a background working with some of the finest chefs of our time in some of Britain’s best restaurants and there is little doubt that he is one of the brightest talents of his generation.

Following his days with Marco Pierre White, Stephen Terry earned himself a Michelin Star at The Canteen in Chelsea Harbour, was head chef at Oliver Peyton’s Coast and eventually came to Abergavenny’s Walnut Tree where he again earned a Michelin Star. The Hardwick is his latest venture, a cool, relaxed pub environment where he serves food that will comfort but that often dazzles too. The menu manages a broad sweep but is focussed on the use of great produce like the sumptuous double-cooked Middle White pork that might come with bubble and squeak and of course some excellent crackling. At lunch the repertoire extends to exceptional grilled sandwiches and staples like eggs Benedict are handled with great skill.

Couple all this with a range of good real ales and some avuncular service and it all adds up to something quite special.
