In the fashionable Brecon Beacons town of Crickhowell it’s strange to report that good B&Bs have, until now, been thin on the ground. Ty Gwyn (The White House) has changed all that. Sue Collins and Peter Webley opened for business a few years ago. And it’s a business they know well.

Sue carved a successful career in travel and tourism, so brings to Ty Gwyn enthusiasm and expertise. The fine late 18th-century house is spacious and roomy, with well-appointed bedrooms themed with a light touch to reflect Welsh writers and poets, including Dylan Thomas.

There’s a definite ‘Sense of Place’ here. You’re served welshcakes on arrival and wholesome local produce at breakfast time. But more than that, it’s the engaging personality of your hosts who genuinely enjoy meeting people and sharing their knowledge of this beautiful part of Wales
