If ever the house buyer’s golden rule of ‘location, location, location’ applied to a Welsh Rarebits hotel, then it’s this one. Warpool Court is situated in a magical spot overlooking one of Britain’s loveliest stretches of coastline. St David’s, in the far west of Pembrokeshire, invariably casts a spell over its visitors. A place of pilgrimage for centuries, it has a strong Celtic atmosphere and palpable sense of peace. Warpool Court’s location couldn’t be better - it stands just outside the tiny cathedral city of St David’s on a bluff above St Non’s Bay with its holy well and ruined chapel.

The comfortable, spacious hotel was originally built as St David’s Cathedral Choir School in the 1860s. One feature which never fails to impress is the unique display of over 3,000 heraldic and Celtic wall tiles. Another is the food: Warpool Court enjoys a deserved reputation for fine dining based on its imaginative cuisine. Fish, not surprisingly, is a speciality.

The bedrooms range in size and many come with glorious sea views. The hotel has a restful atmosphere and peaceful gardens, though there are many amenities on hand for the active, including a covered heated swimming pool (open Easter to October) and all-weather tennis court. But the best exercise is just outdoors. The hotel’s grounds lead down to the sublime coastal footpath around the headland. St David’s arty reputation has recently been reinforced with the opening of a new Landscape Gallery, an outpost of the National Museums and Galleries of Wales, which displays the work of Graham Sutherland and others. Your genial host at Warpool Court is Rupert Duffin. Closed all January.
