This late nineteenth-century 'fairytale'-style castle was built for the 3rd Marquess of Bute to a design by William Burges, and is lavishly decorated and furnished in the Victorian Gothic style, providing a Romantic vision of the Middle Ages.
Whilst this building is now chiefly known as a romantic folly, it was in fact built upon the remains of a genuine 13th century castle, probably founded by a Welsh lord in c1240-65. Castell Coch, or "Red Castle", takes its name from the sandstone which was used in its construction, and stands upon a platform commanding the gorge of the Taff.

The standard opening hours will apply except between 4th January and 7th February 2010 inclusive. During this time the monument will be closed for essential conservation
