Although it has only been around in its present incarnation for about five years, the reputation of the Felin Fach Griffin has spread well beyond the borders of Wales. In some ways it’s true to say that it’s part of the ‘gastropub’ revolution that we’ve seen spreading across the UK, but the Griffin is so distinctive it seems wrong to label it in any way. Much of its charm is traceable to the owners, Charles and Edmund Inkin who have brought their own passion for good food and good cheer to bear on the style of the place.
Whilst the food fits happily into the pub environment and avoids over-elaboration, there is a depth and accuracy to the cooking that marks it out from the crowd. The commitment to Welsh ingredients is plain to see and the kitchen garden adds an extra element to the mix. Menus vary nicely with the seasons, but example dishes like woodpigeon, ratatouille, aubergine caviar and walnut foam or Welsh venison, braised red cabbage and dauphinoise potato give a clear idea of the style.
You can also take the freshness of the restaurant home with you, produce form the organic kitchen garden is sold on a market stall on the premises. Charles and Edward believe this to be the first certified organic garden at a restaurant in Wales.
