You could say that Northop Hall has a foot in both camps. This handily located borderland hotel offers easy access to the historic English city of Chester as well as most of North Wales.

Northop Hall is a good sized, long-established country house hotel that, in recent years, has benefited from a revival in fortunes thanks to the arrival of your hosts, experienced hoteliers Tony and Helen Holland and son Charles. The hotel has been extended and modernised, with a new ‘wing’ that matches the frontage of the fine old mansion-which dates from 1872-perfectly.

The additional space has been put to good use by extending Chequers, an airy, attractive restaurant serving an excellent choice of well-priced dishes based on fresh local produce, that's popular with locals and visitors alike. Memories of Northop Hall's ancestry as a gentleman's residence are most apparent in the comfortable, wood-panelled public rooms and its grand staircase. But it's not the kind of place that stands on ceremony. Staff are friendly and welcoming, displaying professionalism with a personal touch.

The bedrooms, which are benefiting from an ongoing programme of refurbishment, are good sized-especially the bay-windowed Superior rooms ñ and good value for money. Another plus point is the location, just minutes off the A55 dual-carriage ‘Expressway’ into North Wales yet tucked away in its own nine-acre grounds. It’s ideal for that weekend away exploring the coast, Vale of Clwyd and Clwydian Range, an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’. Most of all, it’s exceedingly handy for shopping and sightseeing in Chester.
