The Glamorgan Heritage Coast stretches for 14 miles, from Aberthaw in the east to Porthcawl in the west. It’s a great place to explore, either on foot or two wheels, and there’s plenty of contrasting elements from jagged, plunging cliffs to tiny secluded coves and dramatic sand dunes, some of the largest in Europe. Go inland and you’ll find pretty little historic towns and villages, country lanes and beautiful rolling countryside. The best way to take in all of this amazing coastline is on foot. The 18-mile Glamorgan Heritage Coast walk is a spectacular journey past dunes, cliffs and coves, rich in wildlife and history. At Dunraven Bay there’s a sheltered sandy beach, perfect for swimming, and the fascinating Glamorgan Heritage Coast Centre where you can find out about the history, flora and fauna of the area. About a mile north of Southerndown lies the village of Ogmore-by-Sea. With its caves, rock pools and castle, it’s got lots to keep all the family busy. Ogmore Castle dates from around the Norman Conquest and is flanked by tree-clad hillsides. Halfway along the heritage coast is medieval St Donat’s Castle, now a school. Guided tours are available in the summer.
